Hollywood Star Smog Check Station in Los Angeles – STAR Certified Smog Check

The Visual Inspection

During the visual inspection portion of the smog check, the technician checks your vehicle.
The technician ensures all emissions components are present and properly connected.

- Let’s Learn About the Visual Inspection

During the visual portion of the smog inspection, the technician checks for the presence and proper connection of California-required emissions components. In addition, this part of the smog test includes a visible smoke inspection.

Next, the technician verifies that all emissions components are installed and correctly connected. The inspection also looks for damaged or disconnected electrical connections, vacuum hoses, and any pipes or plumbing that could affect engine performance. If left unrepaired, these issues can increase harmful smog emissions.

*Tip*

Make sure your vehicle does not have any unapproved modifications or aftermarket components. These parts must be approved by the vehicle manufacturer or  C.A.R.B.

In addition, check for any broken hoses or defective components. If you find any issues, have them repaired before your smog check inspection.

- Vehicle Smoke Test

Vehicles that require a smog check must pass a visual inspection for excessive black or white smoke coming from the exhaust or tailpipe.

In addition to the tailpipe emissions test, the smog technician performs a visible smoke check. After completing the emissions test, the technician records their observations directly into the smog inspection system.

Excessive black or white smoke will result in a smog check failure. If your vehicle produces visible smoke, the issue must be diagnosed and repaired before it can pass. In some cases, vehicles with severe engine damage may emit smoke from the engine compartment, which will also cause a failure.

*Tip*

Before visiting our facility for a smog check, make sure your vehicle has reached proper operating temperature. In addition, if you notice any smoke coming from the tailpipe or engine compartment, have the issue repaired before the inspection.
