STAR Smog Check Program

STAR stations are smog check stations that meet higher performance standards established by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Some STAR stations are licensed to perform only tests, while others are licensed to perform both tests and repairs.

If the DMV mailed you a renewal notice for your vehicle asking for a smog inspection at a STAR station, there is no need to worry. All this means is that the DMV has chosen your vehicle to be inspected at a smog station that is monitored closely by the State of California and must conform to high standards established by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Don’t worry, Hollywood Star Smog Check is a STAR-certified smog check station.

Some STAR smog check stations are only authorized to perform smog inspections. These stations are known as STAR test-only stations. Other STAR-certified smog centers can perform smog inspections, as well as smog check repairs. These smog stations are known as STAR test and repair stations.

Both of these STAR smog check stations are allowed to perform regular and STAR smog check inspections.

• STAR test-only centers are only authorized to perform smog inspections and are not allowed to perform smog check repairs.
• STAR test and repair stations are authorized to perform STAR smog inspections, as well as repair and certify all vehicles. STAR test and repair stations also participate in the Consumer Assistance Program.

If the DMV is asking for “Smog Certificate Required at a STAR station”, you can visit our facility for an inspection. We are an official STAR-certified smog check station.

STAR Test-Only Station – STAR test-only stations are authorized by the State of California to inspect both STAR-directed and non-directed vehicles. They are not allowed to perform any smog repairs. The purpose of a test-only station is to perform an unbiased and accurate smog inspection. Since a STAR test-only station is not allowed to perform any repairs, there is no conflict of interest. STAR test-only stations can perform all smog check inspections required by the DMV.

STAR Test and Repair (CAP) – STAR test and repair stations are authorized by the Bureau of Automotive Repair to perform STAR smog check inspections, as well as repair vehicles that have failed the inspection. A STAR test and repair station is the only type of smog check center that can inspect, repair, and certify any and all vehicles. These stations participate in the State’s Consumer Assistance Program and are inspected by the State of California monthly.

STAR Test and Repair stations may also perform smog repairs on vehicles participating in the Consumer Assistance Program.
