The Emissions Test
The first test conducted during a smog check inspection is the emissions test. This test measures the pollutants coming from the tailpipe of your vehicle.
First, Let’s Learn About Smog
The emissions test is the first part of the smog inspection. It measures how cleanly your engine burns fuel and how many pollutants come from your exhaust. To pass this test, your engine must burn fuel efficiently.
Hydrocarbons are unburned gasoline. When your engine burns fuel completely, fewer hydrocarbons enter the air. As a result, your vehicle produces lower emissions.
During the emissions test, the machine checks your vehicle’s HC, CO, and NOx levels. These readings must fall within California’s limits. The machine also measures your CO2 and O2 levels. These numbers help diagnose engine performance, but they do not determine whether you pass.
Your engine works best when it maintains a proper air-to-fuel ratio. The ideal balance is 14.7:1. When this ratio stays steady, the catalytic converter can reduce pollutants more effectively. However, if your car burns too much fuel or shows poor mileage, it may produce higher emissions.

– Performing routine tune-ups, which should include changing the spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, and engine oil, prior to a smog check inspection or as required by the vehicle’s manufacturers will greatly improve your chances of passing the emissions test.
