What Is a Vehicle Safety System Inspection / Brake and Lamp Inspection?
When a vehicle is declared a total loss — whether from an accident, theft recovery, or other damage — it receives a salvage certificate. If you decide to “revive” that vehicle, the California DMV requires a Vehicle Safety System Inspection (formerly the Brake and Lamp Inspection) at a State Licensed Inspection Station before it can be retitled and legally driven again.
The newer Vehicle Safety System Inspection replaces the old Brake and Lamp Inspection. It offers a far more complete review of all major safety systems, ensuring everything works properly and meets California’s current safety requirements.

Important Update
The old Brake and Lamp Inspection has now been fully replaced by the Vehicle Safety System Inspection. Even if some DMV paperwork still mentions the previous term, this updated inspection is the official and required standard in California.
