Brake & Lamp Inspection

Complete Guide to Vehicle Safety System Inspections (Formerly Brake and Lamp Inspection)
At Hollywood Star Smog Check, we’re proud to offer Vehicle Safety System Inspections (formerly Brake and Lamp Inspection) for vehicles with salvage titles. This inspection helps ensure your car meets California’s strict safety and DMV requirements for salvage title registration. In addition, our goal is to make sure your vehicle is not only fully compliant, but also safe, dependable, and ready for the road.

What Is a Vehicle Safety System Inspection / Brake and Lamp Inspection?
When a vehicle is declared a total loss — whether from an accident, theft recovery, or other damage — it receives a salvage certificate. If you decide to “revive” that vehicle, the California DMV requires a Vehicle Safety System Inspection (formerly the Brake and Lamp Inspection) at a State Licensed Inspection Station before it can be retitled and legally driven again.
The newer Vehicle Safety System Inspection replaces the old Brake and Lamp Inspection. It offers a far more complete review of all major safety systems, ensuring everything works properly and meets California’s current safety requirements.
What Does the Inspection Cover?
Our licensed inspectors carefully examine every major safety system on your vehicle, including:
-
Body Structure: We check the frame for proper alignment, structural integrity, and any signs of damage.
-
Brakes and Lighting: We verify that your brakes and lights perform correctly, are in good condition, and meet California safety standards.
-
Interior Safety Systems: We test essential features such as airbags, seat belts, and other in-cabin safety components.
-
Steering and Suspension: We look for issues that could affect stability, steering response, or overall control of the vehicle.
-
Tires and Wheels: We ensure your tires have proper tread depth and that the wheels are correctly balanced and aligned.
Why It Matters
This inspection does more than satisfy DMV requirements — it protects your safety. By examining every major system in detail, our inspectors can spot potential hazards before they turn into real problems on the road. As a result, you’ll drive with confidence knowing your vehicle is safe, stable, and fully road-ready.
